Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY)
TREATMENT OF COMPLEX TRAUMA AND POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD)
Trauma-Sensitive Yoga was developed twenty years ago in the United States. Researchers such as Dr. Bessel van der Kolk and David Emerson have highlighted the somatic impact of trauma, and clinical studies have provided the evidence base demonstrating the effectiveness of Trauma-Sensitive Yoga in reducing the symptoms of complex trauma and PTSD.
Trauma-Sensitive Yoga helps survivors of complex trauma and post-traumatic stress gently reconnect with their bodies in a safe, supportive environment by:
• learning to be present
• practicing making choices
• experiencing how to take effective action
• sensing your surroundings
• increasing and decreasing muscle intensity
• connecting with the body and environment through breathing
Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is an empirically validated, adjunctive clinical treatment for complex trauma or chronic, treatment-resistant PTSD. Developed at the Trauma Center in Brookline, Massachusetts, Trauma-Sensitive Yoga is grounded in Trauma Theory, Attachment Theory, Neuroscience, and Hatha Yoga, with an emphasis on mindful, body-based yoga forms and breathing exercises.
